Lawrence “Egar” Mayers was born in Petit Valley district in the suburbs of Port of Spain on the 10 th August 1943 and attended Newtown Boys' R.C. School . From a very early age, Lawrence was interested in playing the Tenor Pan and began doing so by going to the Invaders Steel Pan Yard, home of the oldest reigning steelbands in the country today. It was while at Invaders in the year 1960 that Egar decided to join with a few men in the Pan yard and began to sink drums under the watchful eyes of the Legendary Ellie Mannette who continued, as time went along, to explain the art to these young men, He continued to play and experiment with the tuning and his ability and talent soon paid off as he was accepted as a Resident Tuner in All Stars Steel Orchestra. Lawrence began touring with the steel orchestra visiting amongst others Guyana , France, Europe, USA , Nigeria where they attended the Black Art Festival.
On his return to Trinidad, news of his unique sound began to spread and he was again contracted to tour Europe with the Band “Merry Makers” as their Resident Tuner. The most significant trip of his career however was his visit to Stockholm , Sweden , to work with Ulf Kronman, making, tuning and conducting scientific research in the production of the instrument. This exercise was a laboratory investigation on the theoretical implication of sound generated by the steelpan. All these tests were carried out at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
Lawrence “Egar” Mayers is a much sought after Tuner, both locally and abroad and maybe considered the most widely traveled of all Tuners having gone to service instruments in different part of the world including Denmark , Poland , England , Canada and St. Thomas.
